This award was created to honor an innovative educator who developed an innovative approach to environmental education that significantly improves student comprehension of environmental issues, fosters an understanding of the link between environmental protection and economic growth, demonstrates leadership and inspires achievement.
The 2007 IP Environmental Education Award recipient, Donald Sprangers, was honored for outstanding curriculum innovation and cooperative education. Mr. Sprangers created the Sustainable LIFE (Lessons in Field Ecology) Curriculum to allow students to develop key science skills through applied research projects they create and implement. He continues to challenge his students in the classroom through community based projects such as the release of endangered Atlantic salmon in Maine, streamside restoration using plants grown in the school’s own wetland nursery and the forest inventory growth project.
Under its former Chairman and CEO, Gene Cartledge, Union Camp Corporation was a leader in environmental stewardship and education. In 1994, W. Craig McClelland, chairman and CEO of Union Camp, marked Mr. Cartledge's retirement and legacy by establishing an award for excellence in environmental education.
The final award was made in 2007.
The 54-member National Forum on Children and Nature, comprised of dynamic public and private leaders, announced the endorsement of 30 creative demonstration projects across the nation that reconnect kids with nature. Read more:
