History, the Military and Conservation Come Together

Fort A.P. Hill is one of the largest military installations on the East Coast, but the Army faces challenges with its training operations and other activities. Homes here in the third-fastest-growing county in Virginia push close to this active training center’s borders. We joined in the groundbreaking work of the Army’s Compatible Use Buffer Partnership, helping to purchase high-priority acres and negotiate conservation agreements with local landowners near the installation.

The agreements gave the Army some much-needed breathing room, while ensuring the protection of the Camden Farm National Historic Landmark and its cultural treasures, including a 17th century Native American archaeological site. “This partnership is a great example of modern conservation,” said Reggie Hall, real estate associate for The Conservation Fund. “It brings together diverse partners with common goals to achieve uncommon results.”
