Adding Historic Acres in Southeastern Virginia

The siege of Petersburg in southeastern Virginia was the last major campaign of the Civil War, nine months of entrenched fighting that led to the final retreat of the Confederacy toward Appomattox Court House and the end of the war. The decisive battle may have come at Five Forks, where massive losses for the armies of the South gave the battle its name, “the Waterloo of the Confederacy.”

We helped protect the historic Five Forks area by working with private landowners and the Richard King Mellon Foundation to transfer more than 1500 acres to the Petersburg National Battlefield.
