In Michigan the Fund has worked closely with local farmers, communities and other partners to protect more than 29,000 acres of the state’s working landscapes, wildlife habitat and river corridors – from the shores of Lake Superior to rural communities and city green spaces.

Ann Arbor: Linking a City to its Rural Heritage

The Conservation Fund is helping to implement the Ann Arbor Greenbelt Initiative, a far-reaching project designed to protect and link city parks, natural areas and working farms throughout the city, while curbing the growth and effects of sprawl.  Read more>

Galien River, MI

In 2005 the Fund and its partners worked with the city and the surrounding townships to refine and carry out the Galien River Watershed Management Plan, an initiative supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to reduce sediment and improve water quality.  Read more>

Great Lakes Revolving Loan Fund

A generous lead grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has enabled the Fund and its partners to protect nearly 20,000 acres, valued at nearly $56 million, within the Great Lakes Basin, the nation's most significant freshwater ecosystem.  Read more>

Maple Bay Farm, MI

Through a loan to Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, the Conservation Fund has protected the 58 acres of Maple Bay Farm in an effort to safeguard vital rural lands along the Great Lakes’ shorelines.  Read more>

Michigan Dune Alliance

Launched by the Fund and its partners in 2000, the Michigan Dune Alliance promotes conservation and stewardship of coastal marshes, dunes, forests and freshwater river systems along the shores of Lake Michigan.  Read more>

Michigan Farmland Protection

The Conservation Fund, in concert with the Michigan Department of Agriculture, has protected 15,000 acres of Michigan's farmland to date through the Farmland and Open Space Preservation Program.  Read more>

Michigan Purchase of Development Rights

Through a state agricultural protection program, the Fund has arranged conservation easements on more than 13,000 acres of farmland in 27 counties.  Read more>

Mystery Valley, MI

The Conservation Fund, through its Great Lakes Revolving Fund, provided a loan to the Michigan Karst Conservancy to safeguard 75 acres in the valley.  Read more>

Shiawasee National Wildlife Refuge, MI

The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, located near Frankenmuth, a historic town of Bavarian heritage, serves as the gateway to the Great Lakes. In partnership with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the Fund acquired 113 acres to establish a Great Lakes Visitors Center.  Read more>
