Protecting Migration Routes Through Alaska's Kobuk Valley National Park

Twice every year nearly half a million Western Arctic Caribou—the second-largest caribou herd in North America—migrate through Kobuk Valley National Park. When a landowner needed to sell his property along the Kobuk River—land that provides many strategic caribou crossing sites—he wanted a buyer who would conserve the land. The National Park Service wanted to buy the property but didn’t have the funding to buy it at the time of sale. That's where we came in. Read the story >>

Wood-Tikchik State Park
Private land development is a pressing threat to salmon and other wildlife as well as the scenic landscape so many visitors come to enjoy at Wood-Tikchik State Park. Through our Southwest Alaska Wild Salmon Initiative, we're working to place conservation easements or purchase property from willing land owners along the rivers and lakes in Wood-Tikchik.
Southwest Alaska Salmon Habitat Initiative
The Southwest Alaska Salmon Habitat Initiative is the Fund's largest project in Alaska and the largest land protection project of its kind. Salmon are the foundation of the region's ecology, economy and culture. The initiative offers an exciting opportunity to help conserve one of the greatest natural landscapes in North America.
Kona, Hawaii: Assessing Green Infrastructure
Green infrastructure in Kona embraces the ahupua’a, the ancient Hawaii land division from “the mountain to the sea” that supported a self-contained community working with the spirit of cooperation of caring and revering the land to meet the needs of all.

Ongoing Project: Chugach State Park, Alaska

With Anchorage's rapid growth, the city has expanded right up to the boundary of Chugach State Park. The 149-acre Near Point property hugs the western boundary of the park and provides access to Near Point and the North Fork of Campbell Creek. We're raising funds to transfer this property to the park. Learn more.

Recent Project: Haleakala National Park, Hawaii

We assisted the National Park Service in acquiring the 3,900-acre Nu’u Ranch, the largest undeveloped parcel in private ownership within Haleakala National Park. The property has frontage on the Pacific Ocean and rises more than 6,000 feet to the rim of the Haleakala Crater. Learn more about what is protected on this property.
